Community Reading Day

Community Reading Day

Tuesday, March 4, 2025

Community Reading Day is the Melrose Public Schools celebration of the annual Read Across America event. People involved in our city (from government officials to business owners to active volunteers) head into elementary and preschool classes to share a bit of information about themselves, what they do for work, and what they do in our community, and then read a story or two.

Interested in becoming a Community Reader? Learn more!

Would you be interested in and available to read to a class on Tuesday, March 4? It will be a roughly one hour time commitment total –  from around 8am – 9am at the elementary schools, and 8:45am – 9:30am at the Franklin ECC.

Wondering what to expect? Each reader is assigned to a classroom. Most readers will learn their classroom match about two weeks prior to the event (some will be later, due to later sign ups). The morning of the event, readers gather at the school they are assigned to for a group photo and answers to any last minute questions. Then readers are shown to their assigned classroom, where the teacher will welcome and introduce them to the students. Readers then share a bit more about themselves with the class, and read a book (or two, if the book you have chosen is short). Often there will be a few questions from the class. Additionally, readers often donate the books they have read to the school.

We will be providing support with book selection, including elementary library ‘wish lists’ and other reading lists. We will also be collecting information about readers’ book choices ahead of time.

We will be asking all readers to complete a CORI and register with The Bridge (note that CORIs with The Bridge are good for 3 school years). I promise to make this as easy as possible for you, hopefully including opportunities to complete a CORI at Molly’s Bookstore (where you can support a local business by shopping for your book at the same time!).

Please note – CRD is a chance for students to hear from people they don’t usually see in their school / daily life, so we intentionally do not place caregivers/family in the classroom with their students. This is an opportunity for kids to learn a little about what other people do in their community – business owners, municipal workers, nonprofit leaders, non-MPS volunteers… this day is for you to shine!
